HOPE

Toward the end of the year, I like to reflect on what I was most grateful for. And look ahead to what I hope for in the new year.

I love serving God and was grateful to start POOT: Phasing Out of Trauma with my co-leader, Lisa Becerra. The team is such an amazing group of women who have worked through their trauma with God at their side. Only a few women have come to POOT and yet we hope there will be more as a new ministry takes time to build.

I loved my trip to Florida with my oldest daughter. We experienced the natural springs, the beautiful beaches, and Disney World.  The highlight for me was Kelly Park Rock Springs. This state park has a natural lazy river that is ¾ mile long. Crystal clear water, about 72 degrees. What a thrill!  Being the first one in the water, I swam happily with the flow of the current. Suddenly, I saw something move in the water. There are alligator and snake warnings all over. Cautiously, I kept my head up as I flowed down the river. As I got closer, it was a family of otters.  Joy filled my heart. I am grateful I didn’t let the fear of alligators or snakes keep me from doing something I love.

I also loved my trip to Croatia with my husband. The water is so clear, with a visibility of up to 80 feet. A highlight was swimming into this stunning cave at Red Rock, Hvar. I felt so close to God as I was just in awe of his creation. We also stopped in Greece and went to the ancient city of Corinth one day. Walking through the ruins, imagining the Apostle Paul being there and the messages he taught. One was to stay strong, keep going, keep your eyes on the prize, and don’t give up.

This message is for us today, too. There is hope with God at our side. When I am grounded as the Beloved, then I am not afraid of the snakes and the alligators in my life. I stay focused on God, what he says about me and what he asks to do. Paul also talks about having peace that surpasses understanding. The “prize” I hope for is this internal peace.

Here is a prayer practice I do that gives me hope.

  • In the time alone with God, come with an open heart.

  • Sink into the chair as if you are sinking into God’s love. Take some deep breaths.

  • With palms up, in one hand, place what crushes your hope for the future. Disappointments. Doubt. Insecurities. Worry. Or whatever it might be.  Don’t try to dismiss it. Do try to feel it.

  • Have a conversation with God over whatever “crush” you have in your hand. Express your authentic feelings. Be angry. Grieve. Be real.

  • When you are ready, slowly raise your hand to God, releasing the “crush.”

  • In the other hand, place what you hope for. Don’t edit or judge yourself. Be real with what you really want.

  • When you are ready, place those hopes over your heart.

Remember, sometimes we don’t receive exactly what we hope for. Yet you can still trust God has a reason, knows what is best for you, and still loves you. And we can have peace in the midst of waiting, wanting, and yearning.

The prize is waiting for you. Don’t give up. Hold on to hope. Emmanuel, God is with us.
